Subliminal Messaging
I really don’t like subliminal messages in advertising. There was a Crown Royal Green Apple commercial with only a hand with black skin. I just don’t like when race is used to sell something. I have no idea if it’s good or not but Crown Royal gets the side eye from me. I think it’s earned. It’s just lazy marketing that somebody somewhere decided that the black hand was a good idea. Thankfully I don’t see that commercial anymore. Maybe whoever thought it was a good idea realized that a person’s skin color is not proof of flavor inclination. Who am I kidding? People just assume that the masses are dumb. In some cases people are right to assume stupidity but all the people I know would see right through it. I think that nobody cares if “they” are making money.
There was this Carmax commercial that featured this black woman selling her car via a For Sale sign in the window. She imagines her car taking a really long time to sell. There’s a guy with a jet pack and alien ships flying around. My problem is that the actresses hair is the same color as the entire seat belt. This oversight would never be allowed to happen if it were a white actress.
I stopped buying puzzles from Bits and Pieces because all people in their puzzles are white people. Once I saw it, I couldn’t unsee it. I looked for puzzles with non-white people and I couldn’t find any. Even jigsaw puzzles have a position on race. My point is to try and do your best when you’re faced with some kind of add. Adds are sneaky and unfortunately the motive needs to be considered.
For some reason, there is outrage over the Little Mermaid. A black woman is casted as Ariel. I just don’t get being upset. It’s an entirely made up thing. No race or gender owns a fictitious character. I think that people are upset because of subliminal messages that the mermaid should be white. But why? All of the little black and brown girls can finally see themselves on the big screen and people are upset. It’s just another example of racism.
