Opioid Epidemic
Pain is an interesting thing. The opioid epidemic affects more white people than black. Among the reasons why is because of racism. Many white doctors thought that black people could tolerate pain better than white people. I had to fight my doctor for serious painkillers after I slammed my hand in a door to the point there was some bruising down in my arm (nowhere near where the door slammed closed on my hand.) Why did I have to fight so hard? Finally after a phone call, I was given hardcore drugs. Originally the doctor wrote me a prescription for high level Tylenol and that was certainly not going to cut it. It’s not like I was sitting around taking pain pills. I had every intention of working with it and through it.
The opioid epidemic is a terrible thing. The government seems to care when white people are affected. Remember the crack problem? It mainly affected black people. Communities were ravished. Now the opioid epidemic is taking place. I’m not old enough to remember or know if the crack problem was referred to as an epidemic (there’s a big difference between a problem and an epidemic.) Again we’re seeing how greedy pharmaceutical companies are. They don’t care if they are making a product that is harmful to people.
It’s like in Jurassic Park when Jeff Goldblum says that scientists were so wrapped up in wondering if they could do it that nobody considered if they should. This is the only time that racism worked out in favor for black people. Due to a bias that doctors had, so many black people were spared being addicted to opiates.
