Sidewalks
I really don’t understand why fixing sidewalks isn’t a priority in this country. They’re used every day and they’re a mess. The sidewalks outside my apartment are dangerous. It’s just luck that I haven’t hurt myself. Bad sidewalks are uneven and they have cracks. Best believe if I hurt myself I’m definitely and immediately suing. Being able to move around is a basic human need.
The only reason I can think of as to why good sidewalks aren’t a priority is because it must be cheaper to settle lawsuits than the cost of fixing sidewalks. Oddly enough, Miami has the best sidewalks. I think that because there aren’t many of them, Florida can afford to have good sidewalks. Paving sidewalks isn’t a one and done kind of deal. They need to be maintained.
Disabled people, parents pushing strollers and young kids are all effected by poor sidewalks. The point of a stroller is that you push it, but you can’t easily do that. Kids trip over uneven pavement. Disabled folks (regardless of age), especially in wheelchairs, can’t get around. Whole groups of people are negatively effected by this. I am black so I completely lack the patience for a lack of accessibility and I just don’t get it. I really don’t understand why.
